Podcast Research and Online Communication

The podcast, Think Fast Talk Smart from Stanford Business is a series hosted by Matt Abrahams, a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Episodes touch upon communication skills and ways for you to improve yours. I'll be focusing on the episode Quick Thinks: How to Shine Online and Excel at Virtual Communication

This podcast episode dives into the nuances of virtual online communication, a concept most of us might have dealt with, especially a few years ago during the pandemic. At the start, there's a poignant observation: the shift to virtual communication alters the context in which we interact. The episode goes on to emphasize the importance of attention in virtual communication and brings insights from various experts on keeping audiences engaged.

Matt Abrahams emphasizes the need for a strategic approach to virtual communication, noting, "Attention is the most valuable commodity we have in the world today," suggesting a clear purpose in communication efforts is crucial. An article from LinkedIn read during Week 5 of our class continues to support this idea, highlighting that you need "...a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your personal brand." When you have a defined purpose, it helps align your communication strategy with your goals, ultimately ensuring consistency and relevance in interactions.

Visual presentation and appearance in online communication are also important. Abrahams includes tips about self-presentation in a virtual meeting which optimizes your visual presence and enhances engagement. The LinkedIn article also supports the notion by explaining the need to make your online profiles attractive, relevant, and consistent. High-quality visuals and clear, compelling descriptions are crucial to creating a strong impression.

Ultimately, virtual communication presents its challenges, but mastering them can yield significant benefits. By embracing techniques like captivating attention and optimizing virtual presence, we can thrive in an increasingly digital world.
